Game Overview

Game Idea : Dr Viral

This is based on a Dr Mario wifi clone I was trying to get together in time for Drunkencoder.com's christmas competition.

High Concept:

The year is 21xx, and Dr Viral is a mad genius bent on anarchy and destruction. You play a young computer hacker who must stop the evil Dr. Viral's plot by curing infected computers. Each computer is infected with a series of three viruses, which in-turn cause effects on your progress.

Platform:

Nintendo DS system

Why it needs to be made:

Dr Mario was never brought to Nintendo DS. The N64 one is great, but unfortunately the DS can't handle an emulator that strong. The NES emulation is perfect, and I am sure the SNES one runs fine, but whats the point of having Dr Mario if you can't play wifi?!?

Playing wifi Dr Viral against a friend will essentially be like the original Dr Mario's versus, except you will get powerups, attacks, and extra goodies. There will be a choice on whether you want to battle Original or Classic mode. In classic mode, it will jsut be like the old one. In Original, all the goodies will be there along with awesome new music and sweet graphics.

Wifi will also make the game split screen/top-bottom. You will see how the player is moving and try to predict what he/she will do next. You can also use this to your advantage incase you are storing an Item or something and plan to use it against them.

Single-player will consist of two modes: classic and original. In classic, the player plays the game identical to Dr Mario with updated graphics. The player will go up in levels, gain points, and die just like the original. In original mode, I will be coding a whole new setup for Dr Viral, which includes spreading viruses, infected programs, and who knows what else. I would like to make a puzzle mode eventually, but that will be further down the line.

Although there are several Nintendo made copies of this game, Nintendo WIFI is the big kicker for this game. SgStair's dswifi progress has allowed a TCP server/client to work without a hitch.

Future progress of this game will include more than 2 players, internet play, and possible adventure mode where you travel around fighting various computers, but play dr mario instead of fighting!

Final thoughts:

This will be a big challenge, and I do intend to complete this game. However, I will need to go through this piece by piece, first starting with the actual Dr Mario clone. Once I have a solid game working, no bugs, and it can run on the real hardware, I will begin my modifications.

Wifi will not be too difficult, I have several papers and books on proper C++ Networking techniques, and TCP/IP server/clients are easy enough. I have previous experience so its just a matter of sending packets at the right time to make it feel natural.

Thanks to Jill for pushing me to continue on this one!
